Russian public survey revealed the facts of referendum

A Russian public opinion survey gave interesting results on 23 March Russian perpetrated referendum for Chechnya. A survey carried by VCIOM, the Russian Center for Public Opinion in Moscow revealed that 56 % of Russians considers the Chechnya referendum as a fabrication which won't contribute to solve the conflict. 65 % of Russians are in favor of peace talks with The Chechen Government. Only 25 % stated in favor of the referendum.

The survey is carried in 100 different settlements in 40 regions of Russia on 28 February-3 March 2003 with 1.600 survey participants. 14 % of Russians stated that the referendum will give negative results and everything will be worse. Another 20 % of Russians preferred to avoid talking on the referendum.

Putin's Chechnya performance was another question which got an equal 44 % agreement and disagreement from the survey participants. 12 % preferred to avoid this question. The Russian Center for Public Opinion VCIOM's survey indicates that the Russian public opinion has considerably changed since the year 2000. The weight of the peace siders in year 2003 is on the upward trend.
